This move, labeled by consumer advocates and energy industry experts as a covert push towards an electric vehicle dictatorship, demonstrates the administration’s disregard for consumer choice and economic realities.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recently forwarded its extreme tailpipe emissions proposal to the White House Office of Management and Budget for final approval. This scheme aims to force an unrealistic 67% of new car sales to be electric by 2032, ignoring the preference and needs of the American consumer. Media outlets like the New York Times and Washington Post have revealed the White House’s plans to further intensify this goal while slightly modifying earlier targets.
“The President’s mission to abolish the sale of new gas cars has been blatant since 2020, utilizing his agencies as tools for his agenda,” said the American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers. They highlight that minor adjustments to the implementation timeline do not alter the ultimate objective: a ban on new gas-powered vehicles. This shift threatens to limit or completely remove access to a diverse range of vehicle choices that currently meet the varied needs and budgets of American consumers.
An EPA spokesperson, in response to inquiries, declined to comment specifically but claimed the agency aims to finalize a standard that supposedly benefits families, conveniently ignoring the economic strain and feasibility concerns.
Reports indicate that the Biden administration might delay the harsh imposition of these regulations until 2030, giving automakers a narrow window to comply with these oppressive standards. This consideration follows concerns raised by auto union leaders amid declining EV sales and rising prices, reflecting a market resistant to forced electrification.
Tom Pyle, President of the Institute for Energy Research, expressed to Fox News Digital that regardless of the delay, the end result remains the same: a government-imposed shift to electric vehicles, against market demand. “EVs have proven to be unsuitable for mainstream use,” Pyle said, emphasizing the consumer’s preference for affordable and reliable vehicles – a category EVs currently do not fulfill.
The EPA’s proposal, unveiled in April 2023, ambitiously projected that 67% of new vehicle purchases would be electric by 2032, a target that seems more about fulfilling ideological objectives than addressing practical realities. Since its announcement, the EPA has faced significant backlash from industry leaders and Republican lawmakers, who argue that the market is unprepared for such a drastic shift. They contend that these standards would inadvertently benefit China, lead to escalated costs for American consumers, and represent a heavy-handed government intervention in the transportation sector under the pretext of climate action.
According to the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, only a small fraction of total car purchases in the U.S. were electric or plug-in hybrid last year, mainly concentrated in California and urban areas. Moreover, despite heavy subsidies, the cost of EVs remains prohibitively high for the average American, starkly contrasting with the affordability of traditional gas-powered vehicles.
This latest move by the Biden administration is a clear indicator of its intent to seize control over America’s transportation choices, pushing a radical electrification agenda at the expense of consumer freedom, economic stability, and market realities.
